so as of yesterday i have a diagnosis AT LAST

the short version: I HAVE CELIAC DISEASE which means i cannot have gluten anymore. this kind of sucks largely because it is inconvenient but is way better than having an untreatable illness.

the long version: my biopsy came back positive for celiac but my blood tests were negative; this happens sometimes, so i am waiting on the results on a genetic test for celiac. if that turns up negative then uh I GUESS WE WILL HAVE TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS but my doctor is pretty confident it is celiac and told me to go on a gluten-free diet right away. if the genetic test is negative then it might be cyclical vomiting syndrome, but that doesn't cause the inflammation i have going on in my small intestine, which means there would be SOMETHING ELSE up in there and celiac is far more likely anyway

IN OTHER NEWS: my ex boyfriend james just about broke my crazy scale this week by apparently marrying some chick he met on monday (did i ever mention that he is gay). i just. what. i don't even know how to get my head around that.

IN WAY AWESOMER NEWS: i joined a LARP and i had so much fucking fun there is no way you can make me feel bad or embarrassed about it. it's called realms and is new england based and is FUCKING AWESOME. [livejournal.com profile] techiemikey's been trying to get me to go to an event for years and i only finally got around to it last weekend. i had so much fucking fun you don't even know. realms has a pretty good focus blend on combat and roleplaying, really nicely balanced, and i'm not very good with boffers YET but i am getting there -- it was just fucking awesome, i ran around hitting things with padded sticks and being in character all weekend, it was an amazing workout and i made new friends and EVERYONE WAS SURPRISED IT WAS MY FIRST EVENT, i got so many compliments 8D and then i went to the fight practice they have at WPI with [livejournal.com profile] techiemikey and made MORE FRIENDS. EVERYONE LIKES ME I AM COMPLETELY BAFFLED!! everyone's all OMG YOU SHOULD COME TO THIS EVENT and they were all sad when i told them i was leaving soon BUT i totally plan on going to at least one of the winter events when i come home on break. THANK YOU [livejournal.com profile] techiemikey FOR TAKING ME 8) it was awesome omggggg.

Oh, bb ;__;.

I have a friend in my study group who has Crohn's disease, and has been completely gluten-free for almost three years. I talked to her about it in depth at one point, and she told me that it was a lot more manageable than she was afraid of it being. Farmer's Markets, Trader Joes, and other organic food stores are always really really good for gluten free foods- rice crackers, little cheese rolls or string cheese, vegetables and fruits are a good snack, and one can even make gluten free brownies and banana bread. It's also pretty good because, as she pointed out to me, a lot of the obvious GLUTEN things are also junk food- cookies, cake, stuff like that, and so the gluten-free diet actually helped her to lose some weight and feel better about herself in general. Usually, a bunch of generic brands have gluten-free alternatives- you just have to know where to look. Dietary needs sections in stores are another place to find stuff like that.

It'll be okay, bb <3 <3 <3 I'm rooting for youuuu

And YAY Larping! It's so much fun, omg. /nerd

omg LARPING there is no one who can make me feel bad about liking this, seriously, it's so much fucking fun and i'll be so sad if i can't find a group to do combat practice with in abq

i'm not too worried bout the gluten-free diet, actually! i mean i am appropriately sad about having to give up things like PROPER BAGELS and REAL CAKE and FRIED FISH but like. i'm sure i'll manage. it'll be a pain for a while and it means i have to cook a lot of stuff from scratch, but i'll just have to adjust! i actually posted a question about this to askmetafilter today and got a LOT of helpful responses, and i know where the local trader joe's and organic food markets are in albuquerque, so i'll be okay.

but not even a gluten-free diet can make me give up baked goods, bb, nothing can

as soon as i get some gluten-free flour i am devising a new recipe for gluten-free malassadas NO ONE CAN STOP ME

Glad you're having fun!

Anyway, ex-boyfriend's situation sounds like an epic trainwreck with a cherrybomb on top waiting to happen.
