runawayballista_archiveso i saw an essay somewhere recently that brought up the bit in the opening movie in BK:EWATLO where the party is in a boat on what is presumably the ocean, and something that looks like the whale jumps out of the water and shakes their boat (this is what i'm talking about). the essay asserts that this is the only scene in the opening movie that doesn't actually happen in game in some shape or form (the character introductions kind of don't count, since they were obviously written for more of a dramatic effect), and that this could likely be due to cuts on the story because it was too long. this is totally possible, since it's not uncommon in the dev cycle of a game for things like opening movies to be finished way ahead of the actual game.
HOWEVER. i'm not sure i quite agree, because if you look carefully at that bit in the video, it's only xelha, kalas, and gibari in the boat. so couldn't that be the thunderfish? i know that is not exactly what the thunderfish looks like, and they weren't in a boat when they encountered it, but again: if the video was made early in the dev cycle, they could've easily tweaked how they encountered it and what it looked like. plus you see the whale at the end of the opening video and i don't think they look like the same creature. BUT if we want to entertain the idea that it was in fact the whale in a section of the game that was cut...
if we allow ourselves to consider that in the original story plans, there was meant to be a section of the game in which they encountered the whale, this would have some significant implications for how the story would have progressed. if the video is any indication, this would have been fairly early on in the game, since the party appears to only have xelha, kalas, and gibari, and this would concur with the time when they're investigating the overflooding of the lesser celestial river. now, it's entirely possible that they could have met the whale and tried to...obtain its wisdom for fighting against malpercio, because given the huge emphasis the game's characters put on how WISE AND OLD the whale is supposed to be, i really don't think they would've showed up to try to fight it. (well, kalas might have.) it's possible that the whale was supposed to ~TRANSFER ITS WISDOM~ to the party via...meemai or something or even BECOME MEEMAI, as an alternate way of meeting him. but it seems kind of early in the story for something like that, especially when the three witches were only just starting to appear. the whale appearing this early in the game also means that the whole idea that the greythornes themselves were the whale hiding in the sky is cancelled out, which seems especially unlikely. yeah, i'm pretty sure that thing jumping out is just the thunderfish. THOUGHTS, FOLKS?
also, one day i would seriously love to have a discussion on the wacky time travel elements in origins and what the fuck actually happened to wiseman in the past after the malpercio siblings were sealed away, but my head hurts and i totally don't have the brain power for that today B(

It wouldn't really have made sense if it was somehow the whale, just because the world was still littered with greythornes at that point, and as we all know the whale is, technically, what the greythornes are.
But I'm not gonna lie, that sounds like it would make a really awesome AU. 'Cause Kalas would be like, SHIT A GIANT FISH, and then Gibari'd be all, GREAT LEMME SHOW YA'LL WHAT A REAL MAN OF THE SKY CAN DO, and Xelha's just like, GUUUUUUUUUUUUUUYS NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO STOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON'T and then no on listens to her like usual. And. They fight it! and then it flops on the beach and eventually ~transfers its wisdom~ and Xelha's like, SOBBB NOOOOOO, and Gibari is busy picking his nose, and Kalas wants to know if he can sell it for a hefty sum. Then life goes on!

Date: 2011-01-09 02:11 pm (UTC)well, encountering the whale at that point would've excluded the possibility of the greythornes being the whale hiding in the sky. as in, the greythornes would've just been a regular animal, or served some other purpose. but that seemed really unlikely.
